Lessons That Address Real Threats

Each 50-minute lesson includes slides, videos, discussion guides, and hands-on activities.

Lesson 1

Healthy Relationships, Online & Off

This foundational lesson establishes a framework for healthy interactions, online and off. Students learn to identify characteristics of healthy relationships and recognize warning signs of unhealthy ones. They practice setting and communicating boundaries in all of their relationships.

Lesson 2

Sexting & Online Boundaries

Students learn that sexting is a serious digital-age issue and discover the consequences they might face if they send — or are sent — a sext. They become aware of possible legal consequences and are empowered with actionable strategies to protect themselves.

Lesson 3

Revenge Porn: When Private Becomes Public

Students learn about "revenge porn"—the act of sending or posting another person's intimate photos or videos without consent. They discover its serious social and legal consequences, gain strategies to protect themselves online, and learn what to do if they ever become involved in an incident.

Lesson 4

Spotting & Stopping Sextortion

Sextortion—when an offender coerces a minor into creating and sending explicit images using threats, blackmail, or emotional pressure—is a growing problem the FBI has issued a warning about, particularly targetin teen boys. Students learn to identify and avoid sextortion schemes in this critical lesson.

Lesson 5

AI-Manipulated Images and You

Students explore how generative AI can manipulate photos of people and discover the real-world harm this causes, even when an image looks fake or is meant as a joke. They consider the ethical and emotional impact and learn what to do if they or someone they know becomes a victim of image-based abuse.

Lesson 6

AI Chatbots vs. Real Connections

There is a growing use of AI chatbots—programs that simulate human conversation through text or voice—amongst youth. In this lesson, they consider when it's appropriate to use a chatbot and when it's better to seek out a real person, especially for emotional support or complex issues.

Lesson 7

Hooked: How Technology Hijacks Attention

Students learn about “persuasive technology”—technology specifically designed to change users’ opinions, attitudes, or behaviors in order to meet its goals. They examine AI systems, including recommendation algorithms, that power many of today’s most persuasive features so that they can protect themselves from these "addictive" technologies.

Lesson 8

Playing to Lose: What is Gambling?

IA 2026 Common Sense Media study of more than 1,000 US boys ages 11 to 17 found that 36% had gambled in the past year, and that 64% of those who gambled did so inside video games. In this lesson, students learn to recognize gambling in its many forms—including the gambling mechanics built into games many already play.

Lesson 9

Is It Gambling In Disguise?

Students apply the four-part gambling framework they learned in the previous lesson to real-world examples beyond gaming, including sports betting, prediction markets, and cryptocurrency. Companies, creators, and online communities often present these activities as investing, forecasting, entertainment, or skill rather than gambling.
