WHAT IS CLUBHOUSE?

Believe it or not, there’s a hot new app on the scene whose popularity is not being driven by kids, but by adults! This may be because it is so ridiculously simple. It’s an audio-only social platform called Clubhouse where users enter different “rooms” to listen in on or participate in conversations. Yep, that's it!

Launched in April of 2020, Clubhouse grew quickly during the pandemic. Chat rooms are typically organized by specific interest or group--there are lots of rooms addressing topics of interest for parents. Celebrities are using the app too, so Clubhouse may just give you a chance to be in a "room" with the likes of Oprah!

What Parents Need to Know About Clubhouse

  • Users must be 18 years of age. That's okay because kids and teens have not shown much interest in Clubhouse yet.

  • There is no recording in Clubhouse. It offers real-time entertainment.

  • Celebrities use the app, so that may be a draw for some youth (depending upon the celebrity of course!).

  • As with many new apps, moderation has been tricky, so there have been reported incidences of hate speech, etc.

  • Lots of interaction with strangers on Clubhouse.

  • For busy parents who like to multitask, Clubhouse offers a terrific way to listen to, interact, and connect with others who share common interests!
