For schools, this shift presents both opportunity and challenge.

On one hand, AI has the potential to transform learning in positive ways. It can offer personalized explanations, support different learning styles, and help students who may otherwise struggle to keep up. Teachers can also use AI to streamline tasks, allowing them to focus more on meaningful instruction and student connection rather than repetitive grading or administrative work.
At the same time, the rise of AI introduces real concerns about academic integrity and skill development. Instead of banning AI completely, many educators are exploring how it can be used as a learning aid - for example, to generate ideas, provide alternative explanations, or support revision.
Training also helps teachers have more informed conversations with students about ethics, responsibility, and digital literacy. By understanding AI themselves, teachers are better equipped to guide students in using it thoughtfully rather than relying on it as a shortcut.

The Gray Areas of AI Use in Homework
One of the biggest challenges schools, students, and parents face today is that the line between helpful AI use and cheating is not always clear. Getting AI to solve math problems:
AI tools can walk students through step-by-step solutions, making them powerful learning aids. When used correctly, they can help students understand methods, identify mistakes, and reinforce concepts.
But if students rely on AI to generate answers without attempting the problem themselves, they miss the opportunity to build problem-solving skills. Submitting AI-generated answers as their own work undermines both learning and assessment.
According to guidance from the International Society for Technology in Education, technology should support learning - not replace the cognitive effort required to develop skills.
Editing and proofreading:
Using AI to check grammar, improve sentence clarity, or refine writing is generally considered acceptable. In many ways, this is similar to using spellcheckers or grammar tools like Grammarly.
In this context, AI acts as an assistant rather than a creator. The ideas, structure, and core content still come from the student, which keeps the work aligned with academic integrity.
Submitting AI-written essays:
Submitting an essay fully written by AI - without permission or proper acknowledgment - is widely considered cheating. This is because the student is presenting work they did not create or fully understand.
Most schools classify this as a violation of academic honesty policies, similar to plagiarism. However, expectations may vary depending on the assignment. In some cases, teachers may allow AI use if it is clearly disclosed and critically evaluated.
Organizations like UNESCO emphasize the importance of transparency and ethical use, encouraging students to acknowledge AI assistance when it is used.
The challenge is that AI tools are becoming more sophisticated, making it harder to distinguish original work from AI-generated content. This uncertainty can confuse students about what is allowed.

Talk Openly About AI
Start by having simple, honest conversations.
Ask your child:
“Have you used AI for homework before?”
“What do you usually use it for?”
This helps you understand how they’re already using these tools.
Then explain the difference between:
using AI to learn and understand, and
using AI to skip the learning process
You don’t need a long lecture. A simple message works:
“AI can help you - but it shouldn’t do the thinking for you.”
When kids understand why something matters, they’re more likely to make better choices.
Set Clear and Realistic Expectations
Instead of banning AI completely, create clear and realistic guidelines at home.
For example:
AI can be used to explain a topic or give ideas
AI should not be used to complete assignments entirely
School rules about AI should always be followed
When expectations are clear, kids don’t have to guess what’s allowed.
