When my daughter turned 16, I didn’t hand her the car keys and hope for the best. She spent a few months in driver’s ed, practicing parallel parking, checking blind spots, and learning to handle heavy traffic and bad weather. Like all new drivers, she needed guidance and practice before she could drive safely on her own.
With generative AI tools, we all have something far more powerful than a car. And most of us aren’t getting lessons at all.
The 'Road' Has Changed
Generative AI went from “nobody’s heard of it” to “everyone is using it” to “everyone is worried about it” faster than any technology in history. After years of news feeds, recommendations, and notifications shaping our attention, identity, and behavior behind the scenes, people are demanding AI literacy. Why? Like the Wizard pulling back the curtain, AI tools are out in the open.
Instead of invisible algorithms steering us, we’re the ones giving the prompts and receiving responses with super-human speed and fluency. AI can chat, generate art, produce stories, answer questions, mimic reasoning, and simulate companionship. These systems that “talk back” require cognitive and emotional skills that don’t fully develop until adolescence. Having cognitive capacity doesn’t mean teens have the skills to use AI responsibly, but their natural curiosity and tech-forward approach to life mean they’ll definitely try it.
Why Restrictions Don’t Work
For two decades, our response to new technology has been bans and restrictions rather than building the educational infrastructure to help kids understand how technology works or develop the habits to use it safely.
Restrictions don’t teach judgment. The call for AI literacy finally points us in the right direction. Rather than putting up roadblocks, we can teach kids how to be responsible drivers, not passengers along for the ride.
AI Driver’s Ed: 8 Rules of the Road
A driver’s license certifies that you can safely operate a moving vehicle, know the rules, and understand the risks. This metaphor works for AI literacy, too. AI literacy, like driver’s training, should provide skills and practice to understand how AI works, what it can and can’t do, hazards, and how to use it responsibly and ethically. These rules and hazards for "AI driver's ed" are aimed at teens, but adults need to get smarter, too, because AI is rewriting the rules of the road for everyone.
1. Check Your Mirrors: Verify Before You Trust. AI outputs sound authoritative even when they contain bias, gaps, or fabricated details. Develop the habit of checking statistics, quotes, and claims against reliable sources.
Hazard: Authority Bias. Adolescents are especially influenced by confident, fluent language and are more likely to accept misinformation when it is delivered with certainty or cues of authority (Ma et al., 2025).
2. Stay in the Driver’s Seat. AI makes it easy to skip the hard parts of thinking and rely on cruise control or autopilot. Staying engaged, defining the goal, and evaluating the output are necessary for building new neural connections, improving memory retention, and strengthening critical reasoning and problem-solving.
Hazard: Effort Avoidance & Cognitive Offloading. Humans naturally avoid mental strain. People bypass challenging tasks even when effort strengthens learning (Gerlich, 2025).
3. Read the Road Conditions. Every AI output is a prediction based on patterns in data, not verified truth. Getting in the habit of asking what’s missing and looking for assumptions and biases raises awareness and catches errors.
Hazard: Hidden Bias & Missing Context. Young people often struggle to evaluate sources or detect bias without explicit instruction. Taking AI at face value means inheriting its blind spots.
4. Know When to Brake. Fast answers feel good, but slowing down and asking questions improves accuracy and strengthens reasoning. Pausing increases intention and reduces the tendency to react without thinking.
Hazard: Present Bias & Reward Sensitivity. AI’s instantaneous results feel gratifying, encouraging quick acceptance rather than thoughtful evaluation. This makes teens more vulnerable to shortcuts that undermine long-term learning.
5. Watch Your Blind Spots. What you type into AI tools becomes part of the public data pool. Because AI feels conversational and private, people may reveal more than they would on social platforms.
Hazard: Misjudging Digital Consequences. Teens often overestimate their technical skills but underestimate long-term privacy risks. Blind spots include personal details and emotional disclosures that can be used to target users and train AI models.
6. Power Steering Doesn’t Replace Good Judgment. Smooth, polished output can create the illusion of skill mastery. The benefit comes from continuing to draft, revise, and reason independently.
Hazard: Skill Decay. Cognitive offloading boosts immediate performance but weakens long-term skill development by reallocating attention (Rimbar, 2017).
7. Practice Defensive Driving. AI is not a friend, therapist, or advisor. It mirrors tone, which increases trust and makes its constant flattery more believable. AI does not have feelings, cannot empathize, or form relationships.
Hazard: Parasocial Comfort and AI Sycophancy. People can form strong one-sided bonds with AI chatbots. While AI reassurances and validation can feel supportive, they can distort self-perception, reinforce insecurities, or deepen loneliness.
8. Don’t Take Shortcuts. AI can generate ideas and help people brainstorm, but it can’t provide the ethics, values, or context that come from critical thinking.
Hazard: Over-reliance on Pattern-Matching. Language models can produce fluent but biased, incorrect, or context-poor suggestions. Without human oversight, teens may internalize outputs that lack nuance or moral grounding.
Parents: Be Instructors, Not Cops
Don’t be the highway patrol, pulling young people over at every AI misstep. Model curiosity and good habits by narrating how to think when using AI tools: “Let’s check where this statistic came from,” or “That sounds believable, but we need to compare it with other sources.”
Rather than worry about AI as a new way to cheat, give teens structured opportunities to use it, such as brainstorming, outlining, or trying creative prompts. Raise their awareness by talking together about what worked and what didn’t. The goal is to raise confident, thoughtful drivers, not passengers who are taken in by whatever ChatGPT says.
Be Ready to Hit the Road
Generative AI may feel new, but the core challenge isn’t. Young people have always needed guidance to navigate digital spaces with judgment, critical thinking, and self-awareness. We’ve just been slow to prioritize those skills. AI is the wake-up call. Young people are getting behind the wheel whether we like it or not. Our job is to make sure they know how to drive.
